How do we know what we know? That is a very interesting question. Deciphering information that is given to us from the media is a start. The best way to do this is by, separating the facts from the opinions, checking our sources, and to make sure that the writer who is from our source is using credible sources. This is becoming increasingly important as we rely on these sites more and more.
Social media sites are increasingly becoming more popular by the hour. One of the websites which I use, that is more of a community than traditional websites, is Reddit. Reddit is formed almost like a bulletin board listing the most popular to the least popular entry. I find there is one aspect of Reddit that is very interesting; opinion. Reddit is a very opinionated website where anyone can sound like they're transmitting the facts out. I believe it to be true because people are consistently fighting on Reddit, saying who is right and who is wrong. While I think this website is very fun and interesting, I see people taking it too seriously and getting offended over certain people's comments.
Now, to give social media some credit, sometimes my first hearing of the news is through my Twitter. Usually links are given to whatever news website I am following. For the most part these sources are pretty credible. It is so funny to me that all of these big companies and news organizations have Twitter and Facebook pages. I was watching the Today Show on NBC and underneath Matt Lauer's face it read, "https://twitter.com/todayshow"
Overall, social media websites can provide a gateway to credible sources and credible material.
One thing I would try to pay the most attention to would be distinguishing opinions from facts.
This way as a reader and writer you can be more self-sufficient in deriving meaning from the media.

The New Media? What Direction Is New Media Heading?
These are certain questions that run through my mind consistently. I think to myself how much new media has changed so drastically over the years. From the invention of the Apple Iphone to the Samsung Galaxy. Certain new forms of media that I use daily are my Macbook, Kindle Fire HD, and my Iphone. It amazes me how I can just use my Iphone to look up certain things that I might need to know, or places I might need to find. I can get on demand access whenever and wherever I am.
New social media has influenced America's society completely, I would even argue it transformed our society. An example is Facebook, which is an example of a social media website in which the users are actual participants. There are many positive and negative influences in social media. Facebook has the positive attributes within staying connected among each other in that it is easy to keep in touch with relatives that may live in another state or country. I personally speak with all of my extended family that lives in Washington and Oregon state using Facebook. Another different social media I use and enjoy frequently is Skype. Skype allows me to virtually see a family member while having a conversation with them face to face. Some negative attributes about social media is that some users have personal information on their social media pages, this could be a bad situation dealing with privacy. I had many professors who told me that many schools hiring teachers check their Facebook to make sure their is not anything on there people should not see.
Our generation has been growing up in this drastic change of technology. My parents don't even use a home phone anymore! But wait, it is not just our generation.... My Grandma has an Ipad and is always worrying about passing the next level on Candy Crush! My grandparents, I would say are very conservative and used to make fun of me for wanting my very own "internet phone". Then my Grandma goes all out and gets herself an Ipad! What I am trying to say is that everyone, when I say everyone, I mean everyone, is on the new technology phase and it is not going anywhere.
